How to Attract an Audience to your Blog?

Paid advertising can break your bank.  SEO is exhausting.  Traffic exchanges are worthless. So what do you to attract an audience?

Answer questions and share the answers.

Your blog topic is a great topic.  Don’t worry about changing it or tweaking it.  There are plenty of people out there who would be interested in what you have to say.  What we need to do is present something that captures immediate attention:  a question.  Questions make people stop and think.  A good question can actually slow down the blur of information from the internet.  A question can make a person stop, realize they don’t have a great answer, discover they are curious to find out a new answer, and then click on your link to see what you have to say.

We each hear plenty of good questions and provide great answers almost every day.  Make a note of that good question and write about it.  Use the question as the title for your article, provide some background, and answer the question.
Use your question as the title of your post.  Next, share your article with the social landscape.  You might notice that this article is an example of this approach.  You can make this same approach work for you.  Notice that Kloodin provides sharing icons on the sidebar to publish your question and answer question to all the big outlets.  Leverage their audiences by presenting a question that some of their members would also like to know.

Invite people you know:  Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn

This is better than just asking all your friends to visit your blog.  If your question relates to them, they could likely follow the link to your blog.  The trust you’ve already established with known friends and followers will help you keep their attention on your blog.

Invite everyone:  KloodIn, StumbleUpon, Digg

These sites let you broadcast to an entire audience.  Your question is more common than you think.  The answer you have is the unique offering you have in store for a visitor.  Make sure that you deliver and you could easily gain more followers.

Consider that these are all free ways to attract an audience to your blog!

Your question is powerful.  Millions of people have the same question.  Social networks let you remind people of their question, and then immediately provide an answer.  Consider, though, that the traffic is free but the opportunity is not.  The opportunity is huge if you treat each visitor with respect.  It can be negative if you take advantage of the event.  Show your audience how much you value their click by answering the question immediately.  Don’t string them along.  Don’t bombard them with ads.  Answer the question.  Give your new audience member every reason to trust, return, and share.  After you answer the question, you can lead your audience to other locations by posing additional questions.  Build trust and fill the advertised need first.

Write for people and don’t worry so much about the search engines.  Mention a topic once or twice and Google will find you.  Don’t go overboard there because your topic is unfortunately competing with monstrous information sites like Wikipedia.  SEO does work after a great deal of time and effort.  If you want results tomorrow, go directly for individual traffic by posting to the social networks.  People read those.  Write for them.  Don’t be shy about inviting them to your site because you know you are offering exactly what they wanted to find.
