Have you listened to a professional give a color consul [...]

Seek professional help

Have you listened to a professional give a color consultation? Have you seen a professional mix color?

There is a reason Professional Salons have hair swatches to help determine your natural level and grey percentage. There is also a reason they don’t have only 5 tubes of color and one bottle of developer. There is even a reason that they are provided with multiple color books to help determine which shade of red, blonde, or brunette you desire. Oh, and don’t forget the amount of hours they spent going to school, studying, testing, and requirements they met before able to obtain their Professional Cosmetology license.

Box Color is all about luck. You choose a box off the shelf hoping that your hair will come out looking like the girl on the front of the box, correct? You purchase it. You go home and mix bottle A with bottle B and apply it to your hair, crossing your fingers you don’t miss a spot. Then you sit and process the color for X amount of time. You rinse it out and …WOAH- what happened?

Box Color has not gone through the process of considering what color your hair is now. Which if its more than one, Box Color will not mix several different colors to make sure yours comes out evenly. Oh, and Box Color didn’t determine if your hair was dry or healthy (yes that matters). This Box Color also didn’t consider if your “silver highlights” were extra stubborn or not. (this also matters) Box Color did not tell you if the ‘ash’ in that blonde was blue based, violet based, or green based or if the ‘auburn’ was a copper based, red based, or red-violet based. Box Color also left out the details of what volume developer had been slipped in that box, which by the way is a huge part of the coloring process. Even if Box Color had told you those details would you know what to do with them or the reason for needing to know it?

When you come to a Professional they can educate you on what tone of color is going to look best with your skin and eyes. They inform you exactly how long it will take and if your hair needs to process extra because of stubborn greys. A Professional can also mix multiple colors for the different areas of your hair and provide even results. They determine the health of your hair and work to keep it in the best possible integrity they can. Professionals can place highlights purposefully to bring out your best features. We can also reach the middle back of your head with ease.

Yes, it costs more to see a Professional for your coloring needs, but it will cost you even more to come in and ask for a Professional to fix Box Color’s mess. The coloring process in a salon is gentle on the hair and custom mixed to your specific needs. Professional color has a higher grade of ingredients. It uses less peroxide, ammonia, sulfates, salts, and alcohol than your so called Professional Box Color. There are even professional color lines that will leave your hair feeling better than when you came in. (Salon Mosaic uses Scruples and I.C.O.N. Stained Glass)

Why would you spend hard earned money on a cheap box color, hoping to be in that small percentage of people whose hair turns out okay? Why would you jeopardize the health of your hair on a coin toss? Your hair is an accessory that you can’t interchange on a day to day basis (unless your Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, or Katy Perry). Your hair goes everywhere with you, everyone can see it all of the time, it frames the first thing people look at when they say hello…your face.

Just as you should never play with fire in a drought, you should never leave your hair in the hands of Box Color.

Every time you visit the salon your stylists talks abou [...]

Every time you visit the salon your stylists talks about products, or at least they should be. They should be informing you on what they are using, why they are using it, and the correct way to use it. Some people may hear a sales pitch, but from experience I can tell you IT IS NOT!

At a professional salon, we inform you about products because we CARE about your hair. We want you to have hair that is manageable for you at home and in the best possible condition. Your hair is an accessorythat is not interchangeable like jewelry, shoes, and bags. You take it everywhere you go!
Each person, especially those with “enhanced” hair (referring to color and/or chemical processes) should be using good quality hair products.
Shampoos and conditioners can be the start to a disaster or make your life easier. There are so many products on the market that are filled with waxes and alcohol. After prolonged use these products can begin to create dryness, color fadage, build up, limp and lifeless locks, or a tangly mess. Don’t you want hair with life? Hair that is soft, bouncy, and lustrous?
Another very misunderstood product is a deep conditioning treatment. Many people use this as a last resort when their hair is brittle and breaking off, but what it should be used for is a PREVENTATIVE. Most Salons have conditioning services that will give you the ultimate results, but they also have take-home treatments of high performance and quality. Stylists can prescribe the treatment best for your hair and the correct dosage to cure your hair-ailments. Dry hair does not always require a protein treatment and when misused a deep conditioner with protein can do more harm than good.
Styling Products are necessary in order to achieve styles and maintain the health of your hair. They should be thought of as TOOLS. Without the correct tools, your job will be more difficult. At a professional salon you can find products that are alcohol, paraben, sulfate, sodium chloride, and even gluten-free. Most professional products are also formulated with higher grade ingredients and even some considered cosmetic grade. You don’t go to the stylist and ask them to achieve ‘the look’ from a magazine without using products—do you? I am guessing probably not. This is because it would be very hard to achieve the fullness, hold, shine, or texture without our tools. It would be like asking for a haircut, but instead of using professional shears a stylist attempted this with garden shears or a box cutter. The results would not be near to the high quality or standard you were expecting. Styling Products are also what PROTECTS YOUR HAIR from all the damage that heat and environmental stressors cause.
Trust us on this one—your hair is an investment and you should protect it accordingly.
Salon Mosaic offers samples of some products to help show you the difference. We also offer products in travel sizes. And any professional salon should always have a guarantee, we do! If you don’t like a product after the first couple of tries then you can bring it back and we will replace it with something you do like!

With the rising use of hot tools, coloring, and chemica [...]

With the rising use of hot tools, coloring, and chemicals, not to mention environmental factors….WE MUST PROTECT OUR HAIR. Flat Irons have become a culprit to many Client concerns. Here’s what you need to know about Flat Iron usage.

1.) What products are you using? This is an important question because using the wrong products or none at all could be making things much worse. Think about it: A flat-iron heats up between 200 and 400 degrees. Your hair is made up of the same thing as your skin. You wouldn’t touch something that hot without protection because it would BURN you. Why are you putting that heat on your hair with out protection?
TRUE STORY: a young girl in highschool, with long hair and highlights, would blow dry and flat-iron her hair everyday with out product. Her stylist had warned her about heat protection for her hair. One day while she was blow drying her hair, a chunk of hair fell off up to her shoulders and it had to be cut into a chin length bob. At that age it was horrifying, at any age it would be devastating. She left that day with a heat protectant spray.

Recommendations: Scruples Heat Protectant Spray, Scruples Hypershine, I.C.O.N. Airshine, I.C.O.N. Serum or India Oil.

2.) Are you adjusting your heat settings? S0me flat irons have adjustable heat settings, others do not. All around your hairline from forehead to nape of neck are your most fragile hairs. These break off the easiest when put in stressful situations (like too much heat). Use your flat-iron before it has a chance to heat up 100% or even cut it off then straighten around your hairline while the plates are still warm. If you can adjust your heat settings turn it down when working in the more sensitive areas of your hair.

3.) It’s all in the GRIP. Most people squeeze the flat-iron plates together thinking that more tension will flatten their hair better. What it is really doing is pulling the hair and possibly creating breakage. Slide your hands from the center of the iron further back. Lets say the last third of the iron itself. This prevents from putting too much pressure and tension on the hair.

4.)Are you sectioning? A flat-iron only has two sides. When you take a large chunk of hair and try to straighten it, the heat is only touching the top and bottom side of that “chunk”. (its like ironing a shirt that’s all folded up) So most people then go over and over and over their hair repeatedly trying to flatten it out and smooth frizzies. If you take the time to section your hair (the thicker your hair the more sections) it will prevent you from excessive heat in the same areas thus less damage. You will also be happier with the results!

5.) Time savers? DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT think that a wet to dry flat-iron is better. Most of them will damage your hair creating more frizz, breakage, and even singe the hair. It is very important when using a flat-iron to make sure all the moisture is out of the hair. It should be 100% dry. When you think that your hair is dry, stop blow drying for 30-60 seconds. Feel the hair. If it is cool then there is more moisture that needs to be extracted. If it is warm then your job is done and you can continue the styling process.

6.) The right tool for the job: Flat Irons come in all different brands, sizes, and even designs. Mini flat irons are great for people with curly hair who have those little baby curls around their hairline or for short hair. The most popular size is the 1″. Its small enough to get close to the scalp, but works well even through thick tresses. Most 2″ size flat irons are difficult to get close to the scalp, but would work fine for those looking for a little frizz control in their already straight hair. When it comes to brands there are so many that it can be overwhelming to know which is right for you. All flat irons should have ceramic plates and a minimum of a one year guarantee. GHD is Salon Mosaic’s personal favorite!(yes we do carry them and order them for our Clients)

For tips on styling, come in for a FREE Consultation or Blow Out Class. We are open Tuesday-Saturday and an appointment can be made by calling 757.427.0200. She has done such an outstanding job she earned the new title of Social Media Coordinator. Adrienne’s drive and determination are just some of her qualities that are admired by all.
Misty is doing a fabulous job as Director of Salon Development. Be sure to ask us about the last team building exercise she initiated. It was a real work of art.

So how can we improve on that? Touch therapy. We can’t wait for you to come in and experience it for yourself.

And what better way to experience it than to receive it free with our VALENTINE’S SPECIAL.
Buy the special for a loved one or treat yourself by buying one of our Valentine’s Trios containing a shampoo, conditioner, a styling product and a free $30 certificate for a shampoo and blowout with one of our talented assistants: Tyler, Deniece or Stephanie.

Who doesn’t love receiving gold for Valentine’s Day? Check out our new I.C.O.N. 24k.
What to look for in a hair stylist, straight from the professionals. 5 points to help you find a hairstylist worth the price.

So many people admit to how hard it is to find a good stylist. So we are here today to tell you WHAT TO LOOK FOR.

Consultations- A stylists should not just be giving you what you want, but instead guiding you with their professional opinion. As stylists, we should take in consideration your wants, but also your maintenance level, lifestyle, face shape, skin tone, and eye color. Not only should they be able to tell you what will look good, but WHY IT WILL LOOK GOOD.

Education- It is not required by the state licensing department or the cosmetology board to continue education once you hold a license. In the hair industry styles and techniques are constantly changing. So in order to have the latest trends and ones that best suit your hair it’ll pay off to go to a stylist that regularly attends educational classes.

Sometimes you really do get what you pay for- At most upscale salons continuous education is encouraged. They also tend to keep new stylists mentoring longer in order to meet high standards and expectations. You will hardly find someone fresh out of cosmetology school just put into a stylist position to ‘figure it out’.

DRAMA FREE ATMOSPHERE- Have you ever walked in somewhere and could immediately feel the tension? If you can sense it, it is there. Imagine how the people who work in that environment are dealing if you cant stand to be there for a haircut. Negative energy can take up valuable mind space. If its not drama free you may not be getting the ATTENTION you deserve. Everyone has bad days, but a true professional should be able to leave their baggage at the door and provide quality services. (this is true for anywhere)

All of this comes down to PASSION- A stylist that has passion will spend quality time with your hair. They will work until the job is done right and everybody is happy. They will be honest about the condition of your hair, and what does and does not work for you. They will choose to continue their education whether the salon provides it or not. They will make you FEEL SPECIAL by giving you their attention and their best work!
